Aveda was established in 1978 with The Art and Science of Pure Flower and Plant Essences. They started with the goal of giving beauty professionals salon quality, botanically based hair products. Aveda hair products were, and still are, designed to be of superior quality for not only the service provider and their guests, but also for the planet.

Aveda was launched in 1978 by Horst Rechelbacher with their first hair care line including Aveda Pure Plant shampoo and Cherry/Almond Bark Conditioner. Shortly after this, Aveda added their first styling product - Aveda Sculpting Gel, in 1983.

Aveda hair products utilise ingredients from all over the world;

Brazil – purchasing Lippia in partnership with the living pharmacy program, which teaches in remote Brazilian communities. The main aim of the program is to teach the community how to cultivate medicinal plants for local usage.This ingredient is formulated in Aveda hair products to reduce irritation and discomfort to the scalp.

Aveda also source Babassu from the eastern Amazon area of Brazil to help sustain organic agriculture and in turn support economic independence.

The Uruku used in Aveda hair products is sourced through Aveda’s partnership with yawanawa of Brazil to work towards sustainability deep within the rain forest.

Australia – Aveda source sandalwood for their hair products carefully, with the aim of supporting businesses in native communities

South Africa – Rose Geranium is originally sourced from South Africa from post-apartheid famers who are returning to ancestral lands.

Peru – Morikue is sourced through Aveda’s partnership with Conservation International which gives power to people in the Tambopata region.
